The Swiss Model 1851 Feldstutzer rifle, also called the Eidgenossischer Stutzer 1851 (Federal Carbine 1851), was the first rifle to be introduced after the Federal Constitution of 1848 transferred armament responsibility from the Cantons to the Federal State. This was the first military rifle in Europe to depart from the 18mm caliber (71 caliber) for the smaller 10.4mm caliber bore (41 caliber). This change enabled the soldier to carry twice as much ammunition. The Model 1851 Feldstutzer rifle was issued to the sharpshooters of all Cantons. Like all Stutzers, it is equipped with double set triggers. In total, 6400 Model 1851 rifles were manufactured with many later being altered to the Milbank-Amsler system. The overall length is approx. 49.5"". The 32"" round barrel has a fine bright bore which has 8 right hand twist grooves. The rifle weighs approx. 10 pounds. The rear sight is adjustable from 200 to 1000 paces. The barrel has a smooth brown patina with moderate pitting in the front sight area. It is marked ACIER FONDU (cast steel) on the octagon breech. The barrel is equipped with a bayonet lug. The lock is stamped GIRARD A AIGLE with a small crown over BF above. The lock, hammer, trigger guard, Stutzen butt plate, and ramrod housing are a mixture of brown and bright. The ramrod is absent and the swivels, along with a period sling, are present. The barrel tang has two holes as a provision for a peep sight. The stock is fine with little wear and no cracks or chips. The left flat has a blank brass medallion.
