German Action Designed by Carl Wilhelm Aydt
Here we present an antique Gustav Zink Retailed System Aydt Style Schuetzen Target Rifle made circa 1911 in Germany. The swinging-block action Aydt system was designed by German gunsmith Carl Wilhelm Aydt (1847-1923) and patented in 1885. Aydt target rifles and pistols, known under German terms as Schuetzen and Scheibenbüchse, were produced until 1939 by C.G. Haenel Waffenfabrik, F.W. Heym Gewehr-Fabrik, August Schüler and other manufacturers, such as this one. All of the original System Aydts used actions made by Haenel with the rest of the rifle completed by another maker. Most of these rifles were made in Suhl or Zella-Mehlis (the German gun-making center) and sold to a retailer who had his name put on the rifle. The most popular chambering for these guns was 8.15x46R. Together with Martini system, the Aydt system was most widely used in German target rifles of late 19th-early 20th century.
Gustav Zink was a retailer of firearms in the early-20th Century. The top of the barrel bears his name in silver. There was a culture of target shooting in pre-war Germany and this was one of the prevalent types.
The overall condition is fine. Gorgeous case colors on the receiver and butt plate with nice original blue finish on the barrel. The action is robust and tight. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. This example sports a solid stock with an oversized check rest. The checkering remains sharp! The rear peep sight is also case hardened and oversized. This piece has been proof dated “5.11”. A great example of a German Schuetzen from the early-20th Century!
