This is an unabashed Best Spanish copy of the classic Holland & Holland Self Opening side by side, light weight game gun with straight grip and splinter forend, hand detachable sidelock action, chopper lump barrels, bushed firing pins, double triggers with front trigger hinged, automatic safety, and the Holland design self opening system. Union Armera evolved into Grulla sometime after this one was built, but the Grulla trademark was already in use as is shown on the water table and barrel flats. Grulla still makes very fine double guns and one with all the features of this one would be quite expensive. The H&H design self opener alone could add several thousand dollars to the cost of a new Spanish best gun. Chokes are Briley long, thin wall Series 26 VX tubes, a $600 option that I added. The Briley VX tubes can be used for all shot types and multiple choke choices are available from Briley.
The English straight stock with splinter forend is nicely figured oil finished walnut with good checkering, drop points, vacant silver oval, and classic red rubber recoil pad. Action is coin finished with nice scroll engraving and blued hardware. She is in perfect working order and locks up tight on the face. Excellent over all with scattered handling marks but no damage, no rust or pitting, and bright bores. Some barrel bluing has thinned from careful use and carry, most notably on the right barrel where my hand wrapped around the splinter forend to shoot. With ideal dimensions, perfect weight for 1-1/8 oz loads, and Briley interchangeable chokes, its versatility has made it my favorite go-to hunting gun for about 30 years now.
