"U.S. Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle Indian Gun. This is a true Indian used 1868 Trapdoor rifle, cut down into a carbine configuration and decorated and repaired by Indians. The wood is very dried out which is not uncommon to find in western climates. The wrist is raw hide repaired and the stock is decorated with tacks. Around the butt are small holes where tacks once were and are no more. The butt plate was removed which is common for Indian used guns as the butt plates were converted into hide scrapers. Metal is untouched and has spots of pitting and light rust. Action functions but extractor is broken. This is an “as found" gun and it is a true Indian gun. Most guns that are seen and represented as Indian guns on the market are guns decorated from the 1950’s to present and are not true Indian used pieces.
