Description:

NICE Antique “L. POMEROY” US Model 1816 MUSKET

Made in 1821 & Updated to Percussion for Civil War

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1816 Musket, made in 1821 on contract by L. (Lemuel) Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This fabulous smoothbore .69 caliber musket would have originally been made in the flintlock format. In fact, the Model 1816 was the last U.S. martial firearm made in flintlock. Since it was a proven design with many still in service, some were updated to the percussion firing system. These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of state militias in the first days of the American Civil War.

The lock is marked with a Federal Eagle over “L POMEROY”. The tail of the lock is dated “1821” which has been struck to partially obscure. The top of the barrel is also dated “1821” and government inspector, view and proof markings are also present. Eagle Head, “P”, “V” and “SJ”, these last the initials of inspector Seth James, known inspector of Pomeroy muskets. The butt plate is “US” marked and just in front of that “3”.

The overall condition is very good. The bore is coated with a fine layer of dust. The iron parts bear a very dark, very even patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in good shape, with a filled 2-inch piece over the front of the lock, as well as a repaired spot nicely hidden under the rearmost barrel band. The action is excellent. Here is a fine example of a musket that was made in the 1820s and was brought back from the brink of obsolescence to fight the Civil War!
