Description:
Fine German DWM Luger 1920 Commercial Pistol

Weimar Republic, Inter-World War Production Pistol

Here we present a German DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) 1920 Commercial Luger Pistol, made between the two World Wars, circa the 1920s. After the Great War, the victors imposed limits on German arms production, as well as the size of the military and many other things via the Treaty of Versailles. Two of these restrictions were 1) that the barrel length be less than 100mm, and 2) the caliber had to be less than 9mm. The first restriction appears to have had the aim to complicate the manufacturing process and necessitate retooling, however, the modular design allowed the manufacturers to simply reduce the barrel length and continue as normal. The caliber restriction was rather ignored it seems. However, this period saw a great production of Luger pistols made for export and commercial sale. Many of these followed the stipulated pattern.

This is one such specimen made for commercial sale. It is chambered for the 7.65 Luger, fulfilling the sub-9mm requirement, and it has a barrel length of 3-5/8 inches (92mm), also meeting the Treaty’s expectations. The extractor also acts as a loaded chamber indicator and is marked “GELADEN”. The safety is marked “GESICHERT”. The top of the toggle is marked with the “DWM” logo. A “Crown/N” proof mark is found on the left side of the frame and the toggle, as well as under the barrel. This gun does feature a provision for a detachable shoulder stock.

The overall condition of this piece is fine. The trigger, safety bar and takedown lever are their original straw color. Screws, pins and springs are niter blued. The rest of the exterior of the pistol is blue with about 90% remaining. There is a small amount of holster wear and some scratches. The markings are clear and legible. The wood grips are nicely checkered and in fine condition. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent. The serial numbers match with the exception of the magazine.

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.

Barrel is 3-5/8 inches in length.

Caliber: 7.65 Luger

The bore and the action are in excellent condition.
