Description:
The ejectorless Colt M1877 DA was extensively produced with 3-1/2” barrels (28% of total M1877 production) and with 2-1/2” barrels (8% of production). A few are known with 4-1/2” barrels and in other lengths, but seldom is a 6” barrel seen as made with no ejector. A total production of less than 100 of these 6” ejectorless models would be a good guess. The few known examples of this configuration seem to be from very early production, so the survival rate will also be small.
A Colt Factory letter states that #34607 was shipped 38 Caliber. 6”, Blue, Stocks Not Listed, To Hartley & Graham, NYC on Sept 30, 1882. The “Stocks Not Listed” entry simply means that the grips were of the standard type for the time (Hard Rubber).
The serial number 34607 appears on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The rear of cylinder is faintly stamped 6, 0, 7 between the chambers. The front of the cylinder is stamped “H” by the factory inspector. By this time in production the serial numbers were no longer applied to the barrels. The barrel only has inspector “J” in the cylinder pin slot. That J barrel inspector has been seen on guns within the 16,000 to 68,000 serial range. The gate is not numbered and appears to be an old replacement. Gates were oil quenched to make them very hard. Some gates became brittle hard, and I have seen a dozen Colt SAA’s with gates snapped off where the rod joins it. So over 112 years ago, while the M1877 was still being produced, someone ordered this replacement gate. The hammer slot of the frame is stamped with the factory inspector “H” and a dot.
All markings are very distinct on this revolver, except for cylinder number and the etched “Colt D. A. 38” on the barrel. The patent dates, “38 Cal” on trigger guard, two-line barrel address, and main serial numbers are clearly stamped.
The mechanism works as it should, with all hammer notches sharp and audibly clicking the sear, providing reasonably tight cylinder lock-up, and with no hesitation in trigger return action. The bore has strong rifling with scattered areas of light to moderate roughness. The cylinder chambers are excellent and smooth, with the pictures showing some grease as applied after this gun was thoroughly cleaned.
This gun shows traces of original blue on the trigger guard, and on rear surfaces of the hammer and trigger. The balance is generally a smooth light-to-medium dark gray mottled patina. The cylinder pin is unusually nice, with distinctive knurling and no damage from plyer removal.
The grips are also unusually nice, and are undoubtedly replacements. These grips fit very well all around the straps and frame. There are no cracks or chips. Such nice grips definitely add to eye appeal and enhance the gun’s value.
The steel front sight on this revolver is in its original half-round configuration and normal height.
