Description:
This is a Remington transitional model Army revolver, serial number 6719, made Dec. 1862 and, although not a direct hit, falls into the range of some revolvers issued to the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. 6-shot, 44 caliber percussion, single action, 8" octagon barrel, blued and walnut finish with brass trigger guard. Serial number matches on the bottom of the barrel (although faint from wear), left side of frame under grip, and on the little tab of the trigger guard. Top of the barrel is marked in two lines "PATENTED DEC. 17 1861" and "MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS' ILION NY" which are still quite legible. Sub inspector marks include an R on the trigger guard in front of the trigger bow, J on the left side of frame behind recoil shield, PS on the left side of the barrel where it meets the frame and also on the left side of frame at breech. Traces of the inspector cartouche show on the left side of the grip but is not legible due to wear.

CONDITION:  All blued surfaces have turned a dark chocolate color. Brass trigger guard is a mellow ochre. Grips show wear and scuffing with small losses at front toes. Left grip has 3 worn kill marks near frame. Bore is very good with nice rifling but typical black powder pitting. Original cone front sight present. Action does not hold at half cock due to hammer notch wear but does hold at full cock and will fire. Cylinder has some wobble; all 6 original nipples are intact. Loading lever has side to side play. Cylinder pin is broken off just ahead of frame, but can be pulled out with pliers. Overall grades NRA Antique Good and is a representative transitional Remington Army Civil War revolver that no doubt saw action in the conflict.
