Description:

Late-18th Century IRISH Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS

By Farrell McDermot of Dublin, Ireland!

Here we present an antique Irish Flintlock Blunderbuss by Farrell McDermot, made circa the late-18th Century at 1 Abbey Street in Dublin, Ireland. This short, handy and devastating weapon was intended for close quarters combat. It features a short overall length of about 29 inches accomplished by having a 14 inch barrel and 13 inch length of pull. The bore is a gaping 1-1/4 inches at the bell. These were employed most notably from horseback or at sea, for use by the likes of postal workers for boarding ships or repelling boarders. One can also imagine keeping this in the house just as many keep shotguns for that purpose today.

In addition to a single blast of shot, this one features a deadly snap bayonet that folds down along the top of the barrel and is retained under spring tension so that when the retainer is slid rearward, the bayonet launches smartly into a locked position, ready for use. This piece is made of brass, one of the original “gun metals”, with the lock and mechanical parts being of iron. The lock is maker marked “McDERMOT”. The top flat of the barrel is marked “DUBLIN”, along with the much later addition of Dublin Constabulary registration markings.

The overall condition is fine. The brass bears a mild patina. The markings are clear. The stock is in fine shape. The bore is smooth and dark with age. The action is excellent. This is a superb defensive or offensive firearm from late-18th Century Dublin!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 14 inches.

Caliber: 1-1/8 inches at the Bell
