Description:
Offered today, a historic C. Sharps 1863 saddle ring carbine, made approximately in 1863-64,converted to a 50-70 cartridge after the war in 1867. "Old Reliable" as called by the pioneers, union soldiers & hunters who carried rifles like these in battle and to the far reaches of the west in the late 19th century.  This rifle retains a substantial amount of bluing on the barrel and a fair amount of case color on the receiver. Remnants of the R.S Lawrence 1859 patient is still visible on the right side of the receiver for the Maynard priming system for the original percussion, paper cartridge firing action. If this gun was percussion, its hard to tell as the New Model 1863 stamp is not visible.  The forearm appears to be a replacement (based on appearance and condition in relation to the stock) the stock and butt plate do not match as the butt plate is from a sharps w/ a patch box. One possibility is the gun was returned to sharps for a replacement and it was replaced with a 1863 stock but retained the original butt plate. The eagle cartouche is visible on the left side (see picture) of the stock indicating the stock is from the Sharps rifle company. The bore is good w/ strong rifling and a few pits scattered throughout. The barrel is 22" to the breach, factory long range rear sight is correct for this model, calibrated to 800yds!  Overall this is a fantastic example of a Sharps saddle ring carbine, perfect for the beginning collector and a true piece of American history!  Reasonably priced and won't last long.
