Description:
One of England's more revered gunsmith's, Joseph Egg built beautiful and expensive guns for the well-to-do and royalty. Joseph Egg was born in 1775, the son of Johann Jakob Egg, a gunmaker of Huningue in the Alsace. Most significantly, he was also the nephew of the renowned London gunmaker Durs Egg, the younger brother of Jakob. Joseph, however, worked in London entirely independent of his uncle, and is first recorded as a gunmaker working in Great Windmill St. in 1800, upon being granted a patent for bending steel under heat. In the following year he traded as ‘Egg &Walker, Gunmakers and Patent Spring Truss Makers’ at nearby 59 Frith Street, Soho. This was swiftly followed in the same year by the commencement of his very successful partnership with Henry Tatham, trading as ‘Tatham & Egg’ until 1814. Following the conclusion of the partnership Egg took up at No.1 Piccadilly (on the corner of Piccadilly and Haymarket), remaining there until 1834. He had many successful innovations, in addition to which is Egg’s waterproof ‘upside-down flintlock’, granted a patent in 1813. Joseph Egg died in London in 1837, aged 62, and is buried at St. James’s, Piccadilly. He was succeeded by his son Augustus Leopold Egg who achieved fame as a painter of the Victorian era.. This particular Joseph Egg O/U pistol is fitted with 6 3/4 inch damascus with gold inlay smooth bore octagon barrels (stamped No.1 Piccadilly London on the bottom of the barrel), engraved double hammers with only a single trigger, engraved silver plated square-back trigger guard, elaborate engraved and silver plated grip cap, engraved side locks, engraved upper and lower tangs, engraved screws, nicely checkered walnut grips, and is .50 caliber percussion. The gun is in excellent original condition, with beautiful damascus patterns on the barrels and all silver plated parts retainig 100% of their finishes. The hammers retain just traces of their original color case-hardened finishes and the side-plates retain 40% of their color case hardened finishes. The bores are excellent and the actions function perfectly. A very rare English pistol. Comes with a lockable (missing its key) Henry Egg Oak (?) presentation case with powder flask, bullet mold, primer tin, bullet rammer with brass fittings, and balls.
