I really love the old Winchester Deluxe special-order rifles. You can just imagine the look on the cowboy’s face when the crate came with his new special-order Winchester. The gorgeous wood and fine factory finishes would bring jealous envy from all his friends. The Winchester 1894 was the first lever rifle able to fire the high-pressure smokeless powder that became available at the end of the 19th century. This fine 1894 Deluxe Takedown rifle, sn8988, was made in 1895 with several special-order features, including DELUXE 3X CHECKERED WOOD, CAPPED PISTOL GRIP BUTTSTOCK, “H” STYLE CHECKERING PATTERN, SHOTGUN BUTT, AND WITH THE TAKEDOWN FEATURE. Anybody that knows the Winchester Model 1894 realizes how rare it is to find a special-order rifle with these features, especially in the most desirable .38-55 Winchester caliber. We have thoroughly inspected this Model 1894 and it is factory correct in every way. The photos will even show the internal stampings on the top tang and in the wood under the top tang that demonstrate it is a Winchester Deluxe and all features are factory correct. The side of the top tang is factory stamped “XXX” and has the assembly number “2345” on the side of the tang and on the wood under the top tang, all as it came from the factory. It is becoming more and more difficult to find a Model 1894 with much of the original factory finish remaining and this rifle has not been molested in anyway. The barrel blue is about 70% with a beautiful shiny bore and crisp rifling. The action was built before nickel steel and does not have the flaking, and still retains 45% original blue. The factory letter states case color receiver, but this action is factory original and was blued since the day it left the factory. Letters sometimes are in error of reality, as this one is. The wood is beautifully figured 3x walnut terminating in a hare rubber shotgun style buttplate. There is a Winchester factory letter that comes with the gun that itemizes the special-order features. What a great piece of history in this 124-year-old rifle. Winchester lever guns have been very strong, investment quality tangible assets, and special-order rifles in high original condition are sure to continue gaining value. Just imagine stalking a fine buck with this Deluxe Rifle in the very capable .38-55 caliber and taking game with such a fine piece of American history! Thanks for looking.
