Description:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR Period JOHN REA Naval BRASS FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS Antique

Devastating Close Range Boarding Weapon

Here we present an antique John Rea British Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa 1770 in London, England. John Rea was a gunmaker in London in the late 1700s and early 1800s, his shop recorded at several locations in Minories. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles.

The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for Naval boarding or defending vessels, stagecoach and messenger companies, home defense and more. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was capable of firing up to 20 buckshot in front of 120 grains of black powder, according to Spencer Tucker in Almanac of American Military History, Volume 1.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape. The muzzle-end of the stock is a bit frayed. The few minor repairs on the stock are stable. “I REA” is engraved on both the barrel and lock. A great piece of British history from the period of the American Revolution!

Barrel is 15-3/8 inches.
