Description:
NSN, .56 Caliber, 25 1/2" flared, octagonal barrel with a very good bore that has dark pitting within the grooves. This is a handy short rifle, analogous to the British Baker Rifle, designed by Nicolas Boutet during the First French Empire. The rifle measures 41" overall and was an improvement on the Model 1793 Infantry Rifle. This example has an overall mottled gray patina on the 1811 dated barrel and “M RE. IMP LE. / DE VERSAILLES" marked lock. The characteristically blocky hammer and large frizzen have a slightly darker patina with pinprick pitting throughout, and the brass fittings have a dull yellow-ochre patina. The stock has numerous handling marks and blemishes throughout with a short crack on the underside at the lock on the right side, and some further cracks and chips along the forend pins, most noticeably where the bail-type sling loop was once installed. The butt has a crisp 1812 dated roundel, and the rear sling swivel has been removed, while the forward sling bail has been moved back to just ahead of the lock. The brass-tipped iron ramrod is not original, and the action is slightly “mushy", but still fully functional. Only about 2,212 were ever made, and this example is in very good condition overall.
