DOUBLY RARE SINGLE ACTION ARMY LONG FLUTE CYLINDER VARIATION WITH FACTORY LETTER. First, only 1,478 Single Actions were made using left-over "long flute" cylinders from the 1878 Double Action Frontier model that were converted to fit Single Action frames. All fall in the serial number range of 330001-331480. This one is DOUBLY RARE because all Long Flute SAAs are rare, but this one is IN CALIBER .32-20. Since most of the 1878 revolvers were chambered in .45 Colt and .44-40, very few cylinders that were left over were in .32-20. Interestingly, there appear to be no Long Flute SAAs in .44-40 caliber. According to the classic and standard reference work, A Study of the Single Action Army Revolver by Graham, Kopec and Moore, their surveys suggest that about 70% of Long Flute SAAs were chambered in .45 Colt, 15% were in .38-40, only 8% were in .32-20, only 5% were in .41 Colt and 2% in .44 S&W Special. With 8% being .32-20, that translates into approx. 118 Long flute revolvers made in 32-20 caliber (in all three barrel lengths). That makes it an extremely rare Colt! The factory letter on this example with #330XXX verifies that it was shipped as a .32-20 with 5 1/2" barrel and blue finish to Shapleigh Hardware Co., St Louis, Missouri on October 24, 1913. This was the first year of production for the Long Flutes which were made until 1915. The letter further states that this revolver was originally furnished with a double action, long flute cylinder. Good overall condition as this one was obviously used, but not abused. The barrel shows some good blue on top and by the protected areas along the ejector housing. There is also some good blue in the cylinder flutes and along the top and bottom flutes of the ejector housing. Screws are generally excellent as is the cylinder pin. The balance of the metal surface is mostly an uncleaned gray/brown. Grips fit about perfectly and show normal wear with more wear to the right panel as is typical for a holstered revolver with the right grip exposed to rubbing. Numbers match, all markings are sharp and clear, front sight has not been filed, hammer has four clicks and the action is fine. The bore shows good rifling and is fairly bright with perhaps a spot or two of light surface roughness that may brush out. One of the rarest Single Actions I've offered. Most Colt collectors have never seen a .32-20 Long Flute except in a few photos in books.
