Description:
SELDOM SEEN REMINGTON-BEALS NAVY MODEL/1861 NAVY OLD MODEL TRANSITION. The Beals revolvers are marked with "Beals Patent..." on the barrel and have no visible barrel threads showing ahead of the cylinder. The Remington 1861 Navy Revolver was made in 1862 with a total quantity of only 7,000 made. The early examples of the 1861 Navy, like the earlier Beals, have no threads showing at the rear of the barrel ahead of the cylinder. At about mid-production the more modern style which showed the threads became standard. The barrels of the 1861 Navy or "Old Model Navy" have the barrel top stamped "Patented Dec. 17, 1861..." as this one does. So, in conclusion only about 3500 Old Model 1861s were made with the Beals style no-thread barrel showing  (this model gave way to the more common New Model 1861 Navy). This is a .36 caliber six-shot percussion revolver of which about all were martially marked and U.S. Government purchased for the Civil War. Being such an early Civil War revolver, most that have survived show very hard use and often abuse. This is a particularly nice example with serial number 15XXX stamped under the barrel. All major parts have a government inspector's initial stamping. The correct 7 3/8" octagon barrel shows an uncleaned aged blue/plum patina with excellent markings. The inspected frame is mostly aged to brown and the cylinder, like the barrel is a plum/blue-brown. Has the correct brass trigger guard and steel grip straps.  Correct cone front sight. The left grip still shows a light cartouche and the right panel has a crack running lengthwise toward the back strap that was probably glued at some time in the past- the wood is original and matching. Good mech, bore is dark and rusty. Overall, a very attractive and quite rare early Civil War revolver with lots of history.
