Description:
As found in a U.S. veteran's estate. Fittings exhibit finish loss and pommel cap exhibits stress cracking. The black finish wood grip exhibits some wear. The RLB 2nd pattern grip starburst emblem exhibits minor wear and is tightly attached. The obverse of the cross guard has been "De-Nazified" and the reverse has a piece missing. Double edge steel blade exhibits spots of age graying and is maker marked "GUSTAV SPITZER". Original magnetic steel scabbard exhibits moderate finish to the factory black painted finish and age graying is evident to the plated finish on the scabbard tip fitting. A "been there" example for sure!
The Reichsluftschutzbund or RLB was the official air raid protection group for the state. It was established by Air Minister, Hermann Göring in 1935. RLB groups were kept busy training the German population for civil defense. Beginning in 1936, enlisted members of this organization were issued a dagger. This is a good representative piece for the rare RLB dagger.
