Type of Finish/Metal Condition: Metal is gunmetal gray having intermittent staining and discoloration, and clear markings; lockplate case hardening has silvered out; hammer has darkened.  There is some very light pitting to parts of the lock and hammer, also near the muzzle.  

Stock/Condition: Oil-stained walnut fullstock with 3 spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel) and buttplate marked “US” near top screw - Stock is sound with scattered surface dents and scratches from military use, heaviest near the rear band; nice "ESA" inspector’s cartouche opposite the lock and a second cartouche that is illegible.  All three barrel bands are stamped with a "U" and all show light pitting.  Buttplate with some light pitting and brown staining.

There is a small "B" on the left side just above the stock line
Beveled lockplate is marked “(American eagle)” to left of “U.S. / Springfield” ahead of hammer, and “1864” behind
Rounded nipple bolster has "(eagle)" marking
