Here we present an antique Russian Military Contract Smith & Wesson Model No. 3, Third Model Single Action Revolver by Ludwig Loewe, made circa 1876 in Berlin, Germany. Production of these revolvers started as early as 1876 when the Russians decided to move No. 3 Russian revolver production from S&W in America to Ludwig Loewe in Berlin. The barrel rib has the Ludwig Loewe Cyrillic marking followed by the serial number, the double headed Russian eagle, “S”, “B”, and circled “II.” The left side of the frame has the Russian “1874” marking. The cylinder is numbered to the gun and is marked with the letter “S” and a circled “II.” This is one of the first of these guns produced by Ludwig Loewe & Co. with the very low serial of “220”. “OOP/1864” is stamped just above the right grip on the frame. Smith & Wesson produced large numbers of the Model 3, in three distinct models, for the Russian Empire by special order. The first was the 1st Model Russian with the Russian Ordnance Inspector mandating a number of improvements to the design, resulting in the 2nd Model Russian, with a final revision to the Russian design being known as the 3rd Model Russian. In 1877, S&W discontinued production of its Model 3 Russian, along with its other Model 3s (The American and The Schofield) in favor a new improved design called the “New Model” Number Three. Smith & Wesson nearly went bankrupt as a result of their Russian contract production, as the imperial government assigned a number of engineers and gunsmiths to reverse-engineer the Smith & Wesson design, and then began to produce copies of the revolver, as is this one. The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish and case colors. The action is strong and tight all the way around! The bore is bright in very good shape. Both walnut grips contain expected handling wear but remain firm and in good shape. This is a fantastic revolver with a fascinating history! Own the original!
