This listing is for a collectors' lot of Colorado history to include a factory engraved 1921 Colt Army Special in .38 cal, Colt letter, and first edition book "History of the Colorado Mounted Rangers", by McClure, Carleton E. - cir. 1982.
The 1921 Colt Army Special was delivered to Whiney Sporting Goods Company, of Denver Colorado, in April of 1921 along with 52 other revolvers. This order was part of the equipment ordered to arm the newly formed and commissioned Colorado Rangers. The Colorado Rangers were fashioned after the well known Texas Rangers and served as both law enforcement and state militia. The commission was completed that year by Colorado Governor Oliver Shoup, which transformed the Rangers to a bona fide police force. The factory engraving " C. R. No. 525" was to be this guns' control number and may have matched the badge number of the officer who received it.
The Army Special was the "go-to" revolver for police forces around the country during the early 1920's. Its popularity resulted in Colt recognizing the marketing opportunity and thus the "Police Special" was born from the demand. The Army Special was ultimately discontinued.
The revolver is in overall great condition with much of its bluing remaining. Some finish loss on the grip and barrel areas due to holstering and use. All serial numbers look to be original and matching.
Also included in the lot is the Colt Factory Letter confirming the delivery date/place and engraving.
Additionally, a first edition book "History of the Colorado Mounted Rangers", by McClure, Carleton E. - cir. 1982 is included. This book is soft bound, but very few were produced overall by Minuteman Press in Colorado Springs, CO. A very comprehensive book covering nearly 75 years of history. Complete with lists, excerpts from law books, photos, and testimonials. Signed by the author!
