Description:
This is a very handsome sword that measures 37 1/2" overall, and has a 31" straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in fine condition, retaining most of the original factory polish, but does have some areas of dark freckling along the edges, and some discoloration at the tip. The etched panels have foliate scrollwork with "U.S." and martial panoply on the reverse; and the name "R. C. Graves" in Gothic letters on the obverse. The ricasso reverse is marked: "HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA" The hilt furniture retains 95-97% of the original gilt finish, and has a lightly tarnished cast silver grip. The hilt is outfitted with a folding counterguard. The scabbard retains a commensurate amount of the original gold wash finish, with some areas of darker underlying brass peeking out here and there. This is a handsome, personalized sword, and is in excellent overall condition.
