Description:
This is a robust saber that measures 37" overall, and has a 31" curved, quill-backed blade. The blade of this well-weighted saber has much of the original bright, factory polish remaining, although there are small spots of dark freckling in a few spots along its length, especially on the ricasso. The ricasso is stamped with a maker's mark on the obverse: "CARL EICKHORN / SOLINGEN", but is otherwise devoid of issue markings or proofs. The hilt has a simple D-guard with single forward-swept quillon, and an intact hard rubber grip. The metal has a smooth, dark brown patina with thin surface oxidation throughout. The steel scabbard has traces of original blue remaining towards the throat, and has a mixed gray and plum-brown patina along the balance, as well as a series of shallow dents near the drag. These sabers saw some WW1 use as "ersatz", or replacement weapons by Germany, and are very similar to the M.89 saber, but this example does not have any issue markings.
