Description:

In George Madis’ Winchester Book he states that of the 1,001,324 Model 1892’s produced, that one-third were carbines.  Among these carbines, only one in 325 had barrels less than 20”.  Using these numbers, only 1027 carbines were “Trapper Models” with less than 20” barrels.  Known barrel lengths are 19”, 18” 17”, 16”, and the legally-problematic 15” and 14” examples.

The bore in this carbine is excellent, with shiny strong lands and grooves.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this bore as a 9.5 with only minor light porosity scattered evenly in the grooves.   I have scrubbed the bore completely clean with Colt 45 scrub pad slivers, as spiral-wrapped around a 40 caliber brass bristle brush.  Bore grease was applied afterward, to preserve this nice bore.

Close inspection of the front sight reveals a normal carbine “post” with a central sight blade secured by a small pin.  In tiny letters on one side of that blade is “Pat”, and on the other side is “Nov 4, 02”.  The muzzle has the usual carbine crown.  The front barrel band is tightly-secured with a screw that passes between milled grooves in the barrel and magazine tube.  The rear sight is the expected carbine “ladder “type, with the ladder number-graduated from “1” to “5”.  The ladder slider works freely into its various elevated positions.  Much blue remains on the sight base.  The 18” barrel shows some original blue near the frame, fading to a dark blue-gray toward the muzzle.

The action functions crisply as it should, and the hammer safety notch is not broken.  The original saddle ring is intact.  All markings are strong, including the “Model 1894” etc. on the upper tang, the Winchester proofs on the action ring and barrel, the “38 W.C.F.” and two line address on the barrel, and the serial number.  The frame is gray with scattered light porosity in some areas, and a few isolated pits.  The serial number 729479 indicates manufactured in 1913.  There are no banged-up places on any of the metal surfaces: barrel, magazine tube, receiver and its components, or buttplate.

Many of these carbines were fitted by Winchester with the less-expensive gumwood stocks, but this one is walnut.  These walnut stocks are even with or “proud to” the adjacent metal surfaces.  The wood-to-metal fit is very close around the barrel, action, and buttplate.  The wood surfaces are generally smooth with random small dings and a slight sheen.  Most of these carbines saw hard use and often exhibit notably beat-up and brush-worn wood.  The original carbine butt plate is present.  The rear barrel band is tightly in place on the fore end.

Overall, this is a much-better-than-average Winchester M1892 Saddle Ring “Trapper Model“ Carbine.  See the 15 high-definition pictures in this sale.
