The flap has no tears or damage and it still has its original leather leg strap which after 100+ years are usually torn or missing. The inside of the flap reads "Clyde Myers", "Captain Engrs.", "AEF FRANCE". More research needs to be done on his unit and branch of service but I can tell you that it's not very often we find holsters from the 1st World War with markings, let alone legible ones that can be identified. I did find a Clyde Myers from Washington State who was an engineer by trade and served about 9 months in France during World War 1 according to a newspaper article online. I suspect this is the man who was issued this holster. If so, he survived the war and appears to have ended up as a professor at a college Phoenix, Arizona teaching Civil Engineering. He passed away at age 72 on February 6, 1957. On the back of the holster, it's marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1914" with US inspector markings. The Model 1912 was replaced with the Model 1916 holster so it's nice to find one that saw use in World War 1 as these were being phased out at that point. This would make a great accessory and centerpiece to a holster rig for a 1912, 1913, 1915, or 1916 vintage Colt 1911 Automatic in .45 ACP. Great looking M1912 THAT WENT TO FRANCE! SOLD |
