Description:
Cogswell & Harrison 2-1/2 inch 20 ga. English SELF OPENING Game Gun
The "Extra Quality Victor" was C&H highest grade side plated BLE light weight game gun.  This one is in the scarce and very desirable 20 gauge with its original 2-1/2 inch chambers and automatic ejectors. Cogswell & Harrison was one of London’s oldest and best gun makers. It weighs under six pounds with a straight English stock of some of the finest 4X French walnut you will ever see on any gun. Splinter forend, drop points and sharp checkering with mullered borders. This wood is georgeous! So is the full coverage deep scroll engraving. This is number 2 of an original matched pair and the number 2 appears in gold in two places and engraved under the forend. The word “SAFE” also appears in gold along with a vacant gold oval in the stock. Even the serial number is beautifully relief engraved on the long trigger guard tang!

London built 20 bores that retain their original 2-1/2” chambers are hard to find, and one of this quality, beauty and fine condition is a rarity. It has automatic ejectors, an early easy opening system similar in function to a Holland & Holland Royal, double triggers, auto safety, tight lock up and extended rib to a third fastener. The opening lever is still well right of center.  The 27.5” barrels are near new in condition and measurements, with bore diameters of .616-.617 indicating near new wall thickness.  Chokes of .006 (Improved Cylinder) and .018 (Modified) are ideal for most shooting today. The stock measures 14-1/4” front trigger to checkered butt, with 2-1/4” drop at the heel, cast off for right hand shooter. Weight is just 5 lb.11 oz.

The maker’s name and New Bond Street address is engraved on the rib along with the model name “Extra Quality Victor Ejector”. Makers name is also engraved on both side plates amidst the scroll engraving. Original proof marks and “Arcus Steel” are shown in the photos of water table, barrel flats, and underside of barrels.

The overall condition is superb, especially for a gun built over 100 years ago (1906-1910). Barrel and trigger guard blueing is near new in condition and the case colors on the action and side plates are quite good and very strong around the triggers and protected areas. Bores are bright and shiny with no pitting or muzzle damage. The stock is free of any cracks or repairs and shows very few handling marks. Checkering is excellent with little wear. This little beauty actually looks like it saw little use but was always cared for...a true “safe queen”.

The leather covered VC case has a maker’s label with the Picadilly and Paris addresses. The case accessories include a pair of snap caps, and a vintage rosewood cleaning rod with brush and mop attachments. Case condition is very good with some dropped corner stitching and good straps believed original. Previous owners' initials are emdbossed on the top.  Additional photos can be emailed on request. Offers invited and promptly answered.
