Description:
Original carved identified wood drum Confederate canteen. Samuel Hogsed enlisted on 7/2/1863 at Strasburg, Va. as a private in Co.K 54th NC Infantry. He served to end of war. Important dates are as followws:
POW 11/7/1863 Rappahannock Station, Va.
Confined 11/11/1863 Point Lookout, MD.
Paroled 2/24/1865 Point Lookout, MD.
Exchanged 3/1/1865 Aiken's Landing, Va.
Although he served in the 54th NC, there is SC carved under his name. I believe it could be one of two things. Probably someone elses initials as he was captured and maybe lost that canteen as the initials are clearly from a different hand . Second, it could mean his home state was South Carolina, not North Carolina. Either way if he meant to put a state designation after Co. it would have been on the same line in the same hand carving. The answer is lost to time. Front panel has a crack (as seen in pic), but is tight and intack. No spout as is common as when they dry out, the wood contracts and the pressed in spout loosens and gets lost to time. All sling metal loops are present. Gorgeous patina and color to entire canteen. This is a great identified wood drum that is above others that are encountered as it has more than just a name on it. Great Civil War item of a Johnny Reb that was to become a POW.
