Description:
#4774 Winchester 1876 OBFMCB 3rd Model, 45/60WCF with the rather scarce 26” length barrel, which is really NOT a “short rifle”(usually short rifles are 24” or shorter) , but just somewhat scarce as compared to the standard 28” length. Unfortunately, it has a pretty danged crummy bore (being about 5 on a scale of 10) and is just slightly better than the downspouts on your rain gutters. VG smooth action and serialized in the #51XXX range which dates this rifle to 1887. With the Model 1876 being the lowest production numbers of the antique lever action Winchesters, this impressive heavy game rifle is well above the average exterior condition from what is usually seen for a Model 1876 in this price range. It does look to have some thin plummed blue mixed with smooth brown patina on the barrel; the frame being slightly more of a blue color, (although I do suspect that it has probably been fogged in with Cold Blue in years past to enhance what original blue that it may have had). Also, on close inspection it looks to have an excellent reproduction dust cover (having far too much blue to possibly be the original cover), and the magazine retainer band also has too much blue and no doubt is also most likely a replacement. It has VG wood with no appreciable damage, except for a couple of minor scratches, dents, minor tang slivers and a crack at the toe of the stock (see photo). Shooting-wise (assuming one chooses to waste ammo on such a mediocre bore), the 45/60 caliber is a decent round with good ballistics, and the cases (or loaded rounds) are available through several on-line reloaders as well as being able to use shortened and resized 45/70 cases. This very nice looking rifle has the standard buckhorn rear barrel sight and pinched blade front sight, standard trigger and crescent buttplate. Overall it is a handsome and always impressive rifle just having a crappy bore that MAY clean a bit better, but don’t lay any serious bets on that being a certainty! However with the prices of these 1876 Winchesters continuing to escalate, it will be pretty tough to find a better one at this price. About VG+. $2675
