SCARCE Blued SMITH & WESSON “BABY RUSSIAN” .38 S&W Revolver Antique
Circa 1876 1st Model Single Action!
Here we present an antique 1st Model Smith & Wesson “Baby Russian” .38 S&W Single Action Revolver, made circa 1876 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first model of the .38 Single Action can be identified by its smooth barrel (lacking fluting), and the long extractor shroud similar to the Smith & Wesson Model 3 Russian pistol, which lent it the nickname “Baby Russian”. The Smith & Wesson First Model was produced from 1876 to 1877 and was Smith & Wesson’s first .38 caliber revolver.
It had a spur trigger and lacked a trigger guard. Like its big brother, it was a top-break with an automatic star extractor for faster loading and unloading. These were finished in nickel and blue and this one wears the scarcer blue finish. It also has the side plate that is held with one screw rather than two, which is an earlier and scarcer feature.
The overall condition is very good+. The numbers match and the markings are sharp. Original blue finish. Both of the wooden grips are firm and smooth with minimal handling wear. The action is strong all around. This example has a mostly bright bore with nice rifling.
