Scarce 1870s WHITNEY PHOENIX Breech-Loading .38 RIMFIRE RIFLE Antique
Built to Compete with the REMINGTON BREECHLOADERS!
Here we present an antique Whitney Phoenix Breech Loading Rifle chambered in .38 Rimfire made circa the late 1870s in New Haven, Connecticut. The Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, CT decided to compete with Remington Arms Company, and this “Phoenix” was part of that extended rivalry from the 1870s to 1881. The Whitney Phoenix was a single shot that resembled the Remington rolling block, but the Phoenix had a hinged breechblock that flipped up to load. This rifle was offered in a Sporting rifle, a carbine, a shotgun version, as well as related military variations.
Little is known about the origin of this model other than it was built on a patent issued to Whitney in 1874. As mentioned above, there are a number of variations that are all marked “Phoenix, Patent May 24, 74”. The Whitney name is not marked on any of the versions. They are all single-shot breech-loaders, with a breechblock that lifts to the right side and upward for loading. The barrels are all blued, with case colored or blued receivers and walnut stocks. Approximately 25,000 manufactured totally during its production run. Only about 2,000 of these “sporting” models were made.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore remains reflective and has nice rifling. This example sports a smooth and solid stock with a repair at the wrist. The long leaf of the rear sight has broken off. The case colors on the receiver are still discernible. A neat single shot rifle from the 1870s!
