Description:

James Purdey .500 Black Powder Express Rotary Underlever Side by Side Hammer Double Rifle

CALIBER: .500 BPE x 3 in. (marked as 40 bore). Barrels and action struck with London black powder proof marks.

ACTION: Floating island back-action non-rebounding locks each signed “PURDEY”, dolphin hammers with bolted safeties, carved percussion fences with side-clips, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving throughout, retaining traces of original color-hardening, long top strap marked “PATENT” between the hammers, long triggerguard underlever with integral skeletal pistolgrip, case hardened trigger plate.

BARRELS: 29 in. blacked damascus with raised smooth flat rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 ½. OXFORD STREET. LONDON.' Fitted with silver blade front sight insert and blued rear standing block sight.

STOCK: Well-figured straight hand stock with raised cheekpiece, checkered grip and forearm, and rear sling stud and swivel with accompanying stud attached to barrels. LOP 14 3/8" from front trigger to checkered steel buttplate.

WEIGHT: 8 lbs. 10 oz.

PROVENANCE: Purdey records show gun was completed in 1877 for the Marquis de Hoensbroech. Original Ledger and Regulation/Range records note specs as 40 bore with a long lever guard, regulated for Eley coiled .500 brass case loaded with 4 drams of No.6 powder, card and plain wads, solid and hollow ring ball. Featured in Donald Dallas' book “James Purdey & Sons, Gun & Rifle Makers – Two Hundred Years of Excellence” (description and color photo of rifle appearing on page 197).

CLASS: Antique. No FFL Required.

CONDITION: Very Good/Excellent with 90% of older reblacked barrel finish remaining with slightly softened barrel markings and various handling scratches. The action, locks, and trigger plate and guard retain ~60% of the original darkened casehardened finish with some areas of spotting. The stock is well fitting with clear checkering and various handling dents and dings and some loss of finish on the wrist. The forend wood exhibits more wear than the stock with loss of finish and softening of the checkering. Action is tight and on-face. Barrels ring true. Very good bores, bright with well-defined rifling. The rear trigger sticks slightly after firing, otherwise mechanically fine.
