Description:
#4922 Winchester 1873 OBFMCB, 22RF Short, mfg’d 1892 (373XXX) with standard 24” length barrel. Skuzzy very leaded-up crrappy bore that resembles the rain gutter down-spout on a 1920s deserted farm house, probably being only a 2 on a scale of 10. However, it does look like it will clean a LOT better with some good scrubbing and/or lead removing mercury treatment. If successful, it does look VERY shootable, although admittedly I am certainly prejusticed and so this is simply a guess. These Winchester 22RFs and also the 32WCFs usually have crummy bores because they were mostly kids guns and rarely cleaned, They did not come with cleaning rods and small bore rods were scarce and kids were forgetful. The exterior has an very even thin plum-blue patina with some very light scattered crustiness which is hardly mentionable. The metal is so crisp and the overall look so handsome that it’s a great temptation to reline it and have a great little shooter. But to do this would then eliminate a lot of collectors who like an original, natural, untouched appearance. Add to that, the 22RF is the rarest of the Model 1873 calibers, only a total of 9000 made in 22Short and 9000 made in the now obsolete 22Long and they are no often encountered. So it’s best that I just leave it to the next owner to decide whether to decide to keep this scarce Winnie totally original or go for a great shooting this gun. It also has very, VERY decent wood with no serious blems or flaws and has nice grain, and standard open sights and trigger. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, twenty-two in all, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. VG+/Fine as described. $2750
