Description:
EXTREMELY RARE , SUPERIOR CONDITION MODEL 1888 .38-40 WITH 2" EXTRA LONG 26" OCTAGON BARREL, #24824, MADE 1889. This top ejection rifle was Marlin's first made to handle handgun cartridges- .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20. It was only made 1888-1889 in the limited quantity of 4,814 combined for all calibers. Standard barrel length was 24" and only 264 were made in the 26" length! Considering that 1,776 Model 1888s were chambered in .38-40, this combined with the small number made in this length make for a super-rare Marlin! Most 1888s seem to have seen very hard usage and most that surface show very hard use and often abuse. Finding one with any original finish is not easy, this one is particularly fine. The receiver retains most of the original high polish blue with only some light smudges on the right side and about full blue on the left side. The distinctive fluted bolt on the receiver top shows fine blue also as does the receiver bottom. The barrel shows fine deep blue overall with excellent markings including the last patent date of 1887. Has the original buckhorn rear sight with Rocky Mountain blade front sight. the mag tube blue is good, but thinning a bit and mixing naturally with some gray/brown. The upper tang is fitted with a Lyman tang sight with the small folding aperture intact. The upper portion of the lever retains some good case color as does the hammer. Even the forend cap shows fine deep blue with only some normal front edge wear. The butt stock and forearm were probably lightly gone over at some point, but are fine and solid. The butt stock shows some minor chipping at the extreme toe and at upper butt plate. The inside of the butt plate has a matching number to the receiver. The action is tight with strong springs and safety notch. The bore is sharp, bright and minty! Rarity and condition all in one!
