Description:
Colt Model 1849 Baby Dragoon Revolver. Serial number is 6157 and has many of the early desirable features found on this scarce model.  This one was made in 1848 during the first year of the California Gold Rush.  These Baby Dragoons were very popular with the miners and of course, some saw use in the American Civil War a few years later.  See Photo of Confederate Soldier holding Baby Dragoon below (which is just for reference purposes, not included).   Features of this revolver include the Squareback Trigger Guard, Standard 4" Octagonal Barrel without Loading Lever, 5 Shot Cylinder in .31 Caliber with early style small round cylinder stops. One interesting feature of this model is that since it lacks a loading lever, the barrel lug is shorter and the the cylinder arbor pin is cupped on the end to assist with pressing balls into the cylinder during loading.  The serial numbers are matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, trigger guard, backstrap, arbor pin, and grips while the wedge has no number and is likely a period replacement. Markings include the early 2 line barrel address which reads:  ADDRESS SAML COLT/ NEW YORK CITY in brackets reading towards the chambers. Both the frame and cylinder are stamped "COLT'S / PATENT"  The cylinder shows approximately 40-50% of its roll engraved scene depicting a condensed version of the Texas Rangers fighting off a band of Comanche Indians as found on the Colt Walker, Whitneyville, and Dragoon Models. By approximately serial number 11,600, the "Indian and Ranger Fight Scene" as it called by collectors, was replaced with the depiction of the Stagecoach Hold Up scene.  The Stagecoach scene carried into the Baby Dragoon's successor, the Model 1849 Pocket Model, and was  used to the end of production in 1873.  Like the Walker and early Dragoons, the Baby Dragoon had just one safety pin located on the rear of the cylinder which is worn but still visible on this revolver.  See Photo.  Overall Condition of this Baby Dragoon Grades to NRA Antique Good Plus Condition.  The metal has turned mostly to a light pewter grey with good edges, legible markings, and visible knurling on the hammer.  The fact that it has nearly half of its roll engraved scene is a fairly good indicator that this 171 year old revolver was not used as extensively as most surviving examples.  The trigger guard shows about 10% original silver plating located mostly under the bow around the trigger. Original Walnut grips are in Very Good Condition with nice wood to metal fits...no cracks, no noteworthy chips, and no repairs.  Like most surviving examples, there is a hint of natural shrinkage around the brass gripstraps.  Screws are in good condition.  Bore has strong rifling and is Good Overall with some scattered light pits from black powder use.  Just a nice respectable Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon with the desirable early features.  Antique, No FFL Required.  25.00 Shipping Via Priority Mail in the Lower US 48.
