Description:
1913 BEAUTIFUL, Engraved German DRILLING 16 GAUGE/8x58 1/2R SAUER & SOHN

The Perfect All-Around Hunter!

Here we present a Beautifully Engraved German Drilling Underlever in 16 Gauge and 8x58 1/2R Sauer & Sohn, made circa 1913. A Drilling (which is German for triplet) usually consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel. These were imminently practical guns for the field as one could take anything from a squirrel to a stag or a grouse to a goose. This is one of the fancier ones with wonderful nature-inspired engraving and horn accents. The cap on the pistol grip as well as the butt plate are of horn, with the butt plate being carved to resemble a basket weave pattern. Hand-checkered pistol grip. Deep engraving. Each smooth bore barrel has its own trigger. To fire the rifle, simply move the lever at the top of the tang to the left. The rear sight will come up as you do this for a traditional rifle sight picture. The front (right) trigger has a single set function for a much lighter, crisper break for precision shooting. The hammers are manually cocked.

The overall condition is nearing fine. The action is excellent. All three bores are bright and reflective with the rifling being nice and sharp in the rifled barrel. The frame is deeply engraved with fine detailed wildlife and game scenes. The checkering is sharp. An inset cartridge box can be found on the bottom of the buttstock that can house two shotgun shells and two rifle rounds. This is a beautiful example of Old World German gun making and artisanship, made just prior to the Great War!
