Original issues of Frank Leslies Weekly Illustrated Newspaper, covering the period of July 2, 1864 through December 31, 1864. This six month period of issues consists of 27 consecutive weekly issues, each complete and consisting of 15 pages. All are in very good condition.
Back issues of this publication were kept stored by the publisher and libraries in bound volumes covering six months each. This volume (No. XVIII) has been rebound in a grey board and black leather trimmed binding with gilt spine identifcation which remains in like new condition. The exterior dimensions of the bound volume are 16 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches.
This bound collection of original newspapers offers a unique view into the turbulent Civil War period they covered, and the minds of those who lived then. They contain first hand battle and leader accounts, other topical articles of the day, political cartoons, advertising and both fashion and romantic advice. The textual content is supported with incredible wood cuts, most from original sketches from combat and other artists, and some drawn from contemporary photgraphs.
This collectible is unique by condition and completeness.
