Description:
Very fine custom rifle made for the UNION CONTINENTALS by  gunsmith Patrick Smith in Buffalo New York in 1861. Smith produced 100 of these rifles for the unit of older age Patriots that protected Buffalo at the begining of the war. Most of these men were veterens of the war of 1812 or Mexican War. Each rifle had a silver plaque inscribed to one of the men. This rifle is number 65 and inscribed to William B. Peck. This rifle uses a lockplate that Smith purchased from J. Henry and Son of Philadelphia. Patrick Smith's name is on the barrel. 36" 58 cal. rifled barrel. For use with a conical ball. The Union Continentals Unit was commanded by past U.S. President Millard Fillmore. The unit's most significant contribution was serving as the body guard of PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S Funeral procession in April 1865 as he traveled thru Buffalo on it's way to Springfield Illinios. Original sling swivels are present. Rifle is all original and is one of the EXTREMELY FEW that survive. This rifle has great Civil War history along with Abraham Lincoln history.
