Description:
London HALLMARKED, Engraved SILVER 16 Gauge Double Gun by ALEXANDER WILSON

With FAMILY HERALDRY Engraved on the Thumb Plate!

Here we present an English antique Alexander Wilson Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made circa 1822. Wilson is listed as a gunmaker working out of London, England, first on Tichbourne Street, then on Sherrard Street, Golden Square, circa 1810-1835. His work appears to have been on the higher end and very ornate with silver and engraving observed on many of his pieces.

This was a custom double made for a well-to-do hunter or shooter. Much of the hardware is engraved and hallmarked silver. The hallmarks are a prowling lion, a leopard’s head, the lower-case letter “g” (1822), and a bust of King George IV (1822-33). Hallmarks are located on the ramrod pipe, trigger guard, and butt plate. The trigger guard features a large, squared off bow on the front, the flats of which depict a rabbit on the front and hunting dogs flushing game birds on the bottom. Finely engraved finials. The butt plate tang also depicts hunting dogs and flushing game birds. The rear of the butt plate seems to picture a very interesting rock formation. The locks and the left hammer bear scrolls that turn into a dragon like serpent. The thumb plate on the top of the wrist is engraved with heraldry that is a smaller crown on the bottom from which a (possibly yew) tree grows and a larger crown over the tree’s top. In the middle of the trunk of the tree is a rectangular banner or object that is marked “THROUGH”.

The lockwork is of very high quality with smooth travel of the hammers, crisp “clicks”, and great triggers. Excellent spring tension. The stock is very finely grained.

The overall condition is very good+. Both of the locks and the barrel rib are engraved with “ALEX WILSON/SHERRARD ST. LONDON”. The actions are strong. You will notice that the hammer on the right is a very nice copy that was used to replace a broken piece and it remains unengraved. The bores are bright and smooth. The stock is solid with a wonderful grain that would stand out even more with some oil. This is one that would be hard to put away out of sight after the hunt.
