SCARCE MODEL 1870 U. S. NAVY ISSUE REMINGTON/SPRINGFIELD ROLLING BLOCK .50-70 RIFLE. Ten thousand of these were made at Springfield with a royalty agreement with Remington for their Rolling Block actions and all were issued to the U.S. Navy in 1870-1871. There, they saw hard use and often less than ideal storage away from salt water and humid salt air aboard our naval ships. Later, these were sold as surplus where many had their bayonet lugs ground off. There is an abundance of interesting historical information on these early cartridge rifles in the books: REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLES OF THE WORLD by George Layman and RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY AND MARINE CORPS 1866-1917 by John McAulay. This example has the correct anchor stamping on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver and the right side of the receiver is correctly stamped with an eagle motif over USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870. Overall metal is silvery-gray. Stock and forend show handling and use. There is a short crack coming back from the upper tang, but all is basically solid. U.S. marked butt plate. Tight action and bright sharp bore! Cleaning rod intact. Springfield rear sight ladder broken above the sighting notch only. Bayonet lug intact.
