Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Important Rodgers & Sons Marked Clip-Point Coffin Handle Bowie Knife Attributed to Peter Rose, New York, mfg. circa 1840. This is a very rare and impressive Bowie knife which I believe was made by Peter Rose of New York City for a local retailer with the pseudo name "RODGERS & SONS" added for appeal to customers seeking a quality English knife. Famed cutler Joseph Rodgers & Sons of Sheffield never marked their blades in this manor and the knife is otherwise identical to those made by Peter Rose. Pseudo markings were actually quite common at the time and were used to make the item appear more desirable. A typical example of this is the use of "LONDON" marked on guns and knives that weren't actually made in London. While American made Bowies are most prized by collectors today in the 1840's a fine English knife would have had greater appeal. The knife measures 14 3/4" long overall and features a substantial 10 3/16" long clip-point blade which measures approximately 7/32" thick across the spine. The clip point is more subtle than later Bowies and is reminiscent of the earliest straight-back knives made during the late 1820's. The last 4 1/2" of the blade is broadly swedged with a false edge sharpened near the tip. Nice full edge with no chips and sharp point. There are several spots of smooth pinprick pitting or blood staining scattered throughout with evidence of light cleaning and some original factory luster still visible near the base of the blade on the right side. Ebony handle shows pleasing wear with 70% original varnish remaining and one tight 1" check on each side. Nickel silver pins, escutcheon, and clamshell pommel with iron ball guard. The original sheath is missing. This is an important knife which may unlock a whole new chapter in American Bowie knife history.
