Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare New England/Provincial Flintlock Punt Gun with ID'd Stock, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1800. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living supplying local markets and hotels with as much waterfowl as they could harvest on a daily basis. The particular style of this example was popular throughout northern New England and coastal Canada and is often referred to as a "maritime provincial musket". This pattern is quickly identified by the lack of a buttplate and/or triggerguard along with the use of wide flat-sheet copper or brass barrel bands. Provincial muskets were also used for Seal hunting aboard merchant ships sailing out of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Considering the harsh salt water conditions these guns saw few have survived in such fine condition as this example. The Birmingham proofed barrel measures 56 1/4" long with the overall length of the gun coming in at just over 6 feet! The inside diameter of the bore measures approximately .812" and the barrel is fitted with a 5 1/8" long forged iron tang with a small brass blade front sight. The metal shows old surface pitting worn smooth with a light plum patina throughout. The lock remains in it's original unaltered form and features light boarder engraving. The frizzen spring & screws appear to be properly fitted replacements however all other lock components are original. The stock retains a beautifully untouched blackened patina and has survived in wonderful condition. The right side of the buttstock is neatly period carved "~ THOMAS LYNCH ~". Aside from a couple hairline cracks near the muzzle and a period repaired crack around the barrel tang the wood remains very sound throughout. Original large iron trigger with period added leather guard. Original sheet brass barrel bands have turned a dark mellow color with age. The last band has split and shows evidence of re-gluing over the years to keep it stable. Incredibly the original horn tipped wood ramrod has survived intact and remains with the gun. The action is crisp and functions properly. The frizzen snaps shut and springs forward securely. The forward lock screw is missing. I've had several maritime muskets over the years but this is probably the best condition example we have offered. They were used as tools every day and simply did not survive. A very impressive piece to hang over the mantle! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
