Description:
Revolver has desirable Hartford address, rare six shot, complete stagecoach cylinder scene, silver plated brass back strap and silver trigger guard with some areas showing brass underneath, all matching serial numbers including the wedge. The top of barrel has been lightly filed and last two inches toward the sight are most prevalent. An expert might be able to clean this up. 1862 is production date, 5 “ barrel, and .36 caliber.
Robert E. Mason is from Chelsa and musters in with 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry Boston, MA March 16, 1864.
3rd MA Cav and Mason went west and were called back when General Early was on the outskirts of D.C. 3rd MA Cav was active in the Shenandoah campaign and saw it heaviest losses in the Battle of Winchester (Opequan) September 19, 1864.
General Emory was pleased with the conduct of the 3rd MA Cavy but said you were too eager to annihilate the Confederate Army
and charged the front line before the other regiments. Their brigade lost 507 soldiers in the battle, and suffered one of the highest casualties rate of the battle.
I was doing more research on Robert E. Mason and found out that he entered 65th New York Regiment before going into the 3rd MA Cavalry. On-line muster rolls are not complete and I need to request Archives files to prove that he fought at Gettysburg. As best I can tell it, he goes into the 65th New York, is injured or ill and leaves in late 63. If you have interest, plese email me. I would be glad to hold the Colt if I can get 100% proof he was at Gettysburg. If not, the price will drop.
