Description:
Unique and very attractive Remington Model 24, made in 1927, rebarreled by Niedner around 1929 (barrel#741 stamped on underside of breech) The 28" barrel...yes twenty-eight inch barrel, has a beautiful, crisp, clean, shiny bore and rifling. Rear sight appears to be a Niedner shop-made unit. Tall front sight looks like a Marbles Sheard, nut no markings visible; might be custom made as well. There looks like multiple layers/applications of black paint or lamp black to the front sight, for anti-glare visibility; will probably wash off with acetone or similar. Walnut fore end looks like an original factory original unit. Buttstock is almost certainly a replacement. We see no makers mark under the butt plate, except the rifle serial number. Could it be a Shelhamer stock? Maybe, maybe not. 13-1/2" pull and 2-1/2" drop. Wood and metal finish are excellent, with only some minor, scattered nicks and handling marks. Wood is tight to the metal, and the barrel clocks-up nice and tight. Rifle was just professionally serviced and test fired (22LR standard verlocity CCI) and received an A+ report card for mechanical condition and accuracy. The inner magazine tube, with a plastic rear knob, is a replacement.
Likely a transition rifle, This example has a very early appearance of the cartridge stop screw (introduced 1928) and the matted receiver top (dropped from production 1928) These dates are from the Remington 22 Rimfire book by Marcot. Published dates and life on the factory floor 90-plus years ago don't always match perfectly.
Overall, a no-excuses, fully functional and usable custom 22, with an ultra-scarce Niedner barrel, ready for a new home. CA sales welcome. Email or call for more info.
