Description:
In the 1950s, the West German Army adopted the FAL rifle for use as their  main battle rifle, but soon discovered that training their new recruits with 7.62X51mm ammunition was costly in the extreme. It decided that a lower caliber and less expensive round was the way to go, so the search for a way to convert the FAL began. The decision was based not only on cost, but German officials believed that soldiers could get the feel of the new rifle before graduating the heavier round. Sometime in the early to mid60s, the Army signed a contract with Erma Werke to produce the conversion kits. As manufacturing usually goes, startup was probably slow at first, and arrived in the hands of the troops in smaller numbers, until the manufacturer got up to speed and finished the contract. In the meantime, it seems that problems arose with the Erma Werke conversion kits, causing the Army to cancel its contract with that firm and sign with Heckler & Koch (H & K), which turned out to be completely acceptable to West German Army leaders. Today, complete H&K .22 caliber conversion kits are scarce and seldom come to market in the numbers that the Erma Werke ones do. The one offered here is complete and the contents are lightly used and in excellent condition. The bolt assembly bears two numbers, 1792 and HK5783.The .22 caliber barrel bears the number 792 and the letters HK and its bore is shiny, with sharp rifling, despite needing a patch run through it. The case is intact, but shows handling wear and minor interior rubs, as it should after almost sixty years of handling, so see photos for a better idea of its condition. No FFL is required, this is not a gun, just an insert to another gun to convert it's caliber. Buyer to pay shipping and insurance. USPS Money Orders or Cashier’s Check only, please. Thanks for looking.
