Description:
This is a beautiful all-original and scarce variation of a World War 2 German Army Officer's Lion's Head Sword complete with the original scabbard by the Robert Klaas firm.  The unique and beautiful "Open-Winged" Nazi Eagle on the crossguard identifies it as a pattern # 237, as shown on page 102 of the book Swords of Germany 1900-1945 by John Angolia, as well as page 25 of Third Reich Swords by Frances Catella.  In addition to the open-winged Nazi Eagle on the crossguard, this handsome sword features a Lion's head pommel with Ruby eye inserts and extensive oak leaf and acorn details on the bow guard and spine of the handle.  Opposite the Nazi eagle on the reverse of the crossguard there is an oval for initials that has not been engraved.  The grooved black handle insert is wire-wrapped with 3 strands of twisted wire per groove. The blade on this Robert Klaas Lion's Head sword is 32" inches long and has mirror-bright original plating.  The fuller or blood groove runs about 21 inches of the length of the blade.  The blade is stamped with the Robert Klaas "Kissing Cranes" company logo over "Robt Klaas" and "Solingen".  This sword is in excellent condition overall.  The gold finish on the handle rates 98%, the twisted wire wrapping is intact, the black handle insert is in excellent condition, and the original Ruby eyes are still in place on the Lion.  The blade of this sword is in excellent condition overall as well.  The factory plating is fully intact, clean, bright, and rates 98% with just a few little tiny handling marks/imperfections visible only under super close inspection.  The original scabbard is in good condition overall, free from any dents, bends, cracks, or major damage.  The original factory black paint is still intact, showing some scattered minor scuffs, wear, and scratches, but is still quite attractive as you can see in the pictures.  The biggest deduction on the scabbard is the missing throat piece, which could be replaced by the new owner with a donor part from a lessor sword's scabbard if he or she so chooses.  All in all, this is a very neat and scarce Third Reich Lion's Head Officer's Sword variation from one of Germany's more famous Solingen-based swordsmiths.  This sword would be an excellent addition to any World War 2 militaria collection as an investment, and a stunning display piece.
