Description:
General Specs: Marlin, Year 1889, 38-W, 6lbs 12oz
Serial Number: 24270

I get to look at a lot of fine lever rifles in my travels to shows and shoots.  Vintage Firearms, Inc is known for fine shotguns, but I have bought and sold many fine bolt and lever rifles over the last few decades.  I especially like the less common lever guns from the days of the Old West…you know, the ones we saw in the cowboy movies.  It is nice to know that there are still fantastic, collectible, investment quality rifles out there that are affordable.  The Marlin Model 1888 rifle shown here, sn24270 built in 1889 in .38-40 WCF caliber, is AN INCREDIBLE FIND, AS IT IS A LOW PRODUCTION (4800 total ever made), VERY STRONG 95% FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION RIFLE THAT HAS AN EXCELLENT PLUS BORE AND HAS NOT BEEN ALTERED SINCE LEAVING THE FACTORY 131 YEARS AGO.  Marlin Firearms Company was a direct competitor to Winchester Repeating Arms in an era when the Wild West was still new and unfolding.  Looking today at the mechanics and firing systems, most agree that the Marlin was the superior weapon mechanically but did not have the marketing that would allow them to outsell the Winchester.  Marlin did produce a large number of fine rifles in various models.  The Model 1881 had over 36,000 produced, and the Model 1889, their first side eject model, sold over 55,000 rifles.  The Model 1888 was the last top-eject Marlin rifle model and was designed for the shorter pistol caliber cartridges like the .38-40, .32-40, and the .44-40, allowing the settlers, cowboys, and travelers to have one bag of cartridges for both their rifle and revolver.  Having only been made for 2 years and only 4800 total Model 1888 rifles produced is an incredibly short lived and low production firearm and why collectors are so attracted to the Marlin Model 1888.  Rarely do you find such an honest, high-condition Marlin antique rifle, especially WITH A PRISTINE BORE like this rifle has.  Just look at the photos and you will see quite an amazing Marlin antique rifle.  You can still buy ammunition for this ANTIQUE RIFLE, and we can ship this gun to any address you specify without any license required.  This is a true, collector quality, investment grade Marlin lever rifle from the days of the Wild West when cowboys and outlaws road horses with rifles like this Marlin in their scabbard ready for danger.  What a great rifle to add to your collection!  Thanks for looking.
