Description:
John Venables started in business in the mid-19th century in Oxford, site of the famous university. His son joined the firm in the 1880’s and the firm remained in business until 1985! Venables was known for the hiqh quality of his guns and this one, no. 2724 is a beautiful example of his work. Profusely engraved and the straight grip and splinter forearm made of nicely figured English walnut. Checkering is crisp. It has double triggers auto ejectors, and a hidden third fastener for strength. It weighs 6lb 4oz. *** The 28” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and have shiny bores. They are topped by a solid concave swamped game style rib. The rib is inscribed “A Venables & Son, Oxford”. The right barrel is bored 0.734 with a constriction of 0.005 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.737 and has a constriction of 0.039 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The right barrel shows some mild pitting near the muzzles. The bluing is otherwise excellent but it does show a few wear marks. *** The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut and both the finish and checkering are in excellent condition. Stock dimensions are 14-3/16” over a thin buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2-14”. Cast off for the righthanded shot. *** SPECIAL NOTE: This gun is No. 2 of a pair and can be purchased with its consecutively serial numbered mate which is listed separately in their oak & leather double gun case with maker’s label.
