Description:
This is a very cool old Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 27 .357 Magnum revolver with a 3.5" inch barrel that was manufactured in 1950.  Somewhere along the way this Smith was refinished with a Nickel-plated finish, likely sometime more than 20 years ago given the overall condition of the gun.  The Post-WW2 Pre-Model 27 .357 Magnum revolver was first introduced in 1947 and remained in production until 1957 when it became known as the Model 27.  These Pre-27 N-frame 5-screw guns share a "S" serial number prefix and were offered in either a gloss-blue or Nickel finish, and available in 5 barrel lengths of 3.5", 5", 6", 6.5", and 8 & 3/8ths" inches.  This DA/SA revolver featured a 6-shot fluted cylinder, adjustable target style sights, a fully-checkered topstrap, and checkered American Walnut "Diamond" grips.  The S&W Pre-27 was the firm's top-of-the-line regular-production .357 Magnum revolver and no corners or costs were cut in their construction and finish.  The actions were all built and hand-fit by the best gunsmiths that S&W employed, and the fit and finish of the gun was of the very highest quality or it didn't leave the factory.  Today these revolvers are considered one of the all-time classics from Smith & Wesson and are sought-after by collectors and shooters alike.  This particular gun is serial number S76442 and has a factory 3.5" inch barrel, the shortest offered by S&W and quite scarce compared to the other barrel lengths produced.  As mentioned previously, it has been Nickel-plated sometime after leaving the factory.  The Nickel finish is still very bright and handsome, showing only some minor handling marks on top of the finish and one small area of flaking at the top of the cylinder swingarm.  Under close inspection you can see some very small pits and imperfections under the Nickel plating, but the factory markings are all still crisp and clean.  The hammer and trigger still retain the original factory case colors, and both parts still show some nice color, particularly in the more protected areas.  The sights on this gun would have originally been blued and are now Nickel-plated, however the fine checkering is still deep and sharp looking with no visible damage or shallowness that would occur with Nickel plating that is too thick.  Whomever did the Nickel plating job did a great job overall.  The bore in this Smith is excellent, showing well-defined lands and grooves in the rifling and no visible imperfections or pitting.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as clean and free from damage.  All of the serial-numbered parts are matching on this Pre-27 except for the grips, and both the frame and cylinder crane show matching factory "assembly" numbers.  The grips on this revolver are mismatched, with one the proper "diamond" type and the other a later version without the diamond.  Both grip panels are in very good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  Both grip panels fit this Smith pretty well given that they are not the originals, and both grips are tight to the frame with no wiggle.  The action on this Pre-27 really has to be felt to truly be appreciated.  It is extremely smooth and slick whether it is worked in single or double-action, and it is in perfect time no matter what speed it is cycled.  All of the controls are in working order including the adjustable rear sight, and the trigger is quite good, breaking with a medium to light pull with no grittiness or slop.  This Smith & Wesson Pre-27 .357 Magnum revolver would be the perfect choice for someone who wants a classic S&W that they can take out and shoot without hurting it's collectible value.  The 3.5" inch barrel makes it a desirable gun to collectors due to it's scarcity, while shooters will appreciate the short barrel for both it's cool looks and compactness if the gun is used for self defense whether on foot, in the car, or at home.
