Description:
Serial #2844, .303 British, 20 3/4" barrel with a very good bore that has some freckling within the grooves. This is an 1896 dated carbine, and retains about 60-70% of the original blue with the balance faded to pewter gray mixing with some plum-brown patina here and there. The bolt itself is matching numbered and has some silvering along the bearing surfaces as well as a small amount of fading along the edges of the handle and safety lever. Crisp military acceptance proofs are present at the breech of the “E" marked, Enfield-rifled barrel. The walnut stock, forend, and handguard have an added armory varnish over small handling marks and blemishes, while there are some stable cracks at the wrist at the socket. The British military cartouche and Canadian “M & D" stamp (Militia & Defence) on the right side are still clearly legible. The brass disk is unmarked, but a crisp Royal North West Mounted Police stamp is present above a deeply stamped issue number: “586". The original chained magazine is still present, but the cleaning rod is not. This is a fine, pre-Boer War LEC Mk. I with Canadian military and RNWMP markings, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
