John Walch, New York, Iron Frame Ten-Shot Double Hammer Pocket Revolver Identified to Civil War Captain Thomas Augustus Budd, 2nd New York Mounted Rifles, .31 Cal, mfg. 1860-1862. This is a very intriguing pistol with great history. Approximately 3,000 were manufactured by Oliver Winchester's New Haven Arms Company alongside the Henry rifle for John Walch and J. P. Lindsay who had developed this most unusual design. The five-chamber cylinder features ten nipples with two hammers. Each chamber is double loaded with two charges superposed one on top of the other. Both hammers are cocked together and as the single spur trigger is pulled the right hammer falls first igniting the forward charge via a special channel concealed within the cylinder. As the trigger is pulled further the left hammer drops firing the conventionally loaded rear charge. When properly loaded with grease between the two charges the system functioned surprisingly well and provided double the fire power of any typical pocket revolver of the era. It is not surprising that Walch revolvers quickly became popular among Union officers and soldiers during the American Civil War. Famously one entire company of the 9th Michigan infantry armed themselves with Walch pocket revolvers and used them successfully in battle. This example features the scarcer iron frame as opposed to brass which made up approximately 1/3 of total production. The metal has a rich dark plum patina overall with some very fine pinprick pitting just beginning to form on the cylinder and recoil shield yet retaining nice sharp edges throughout. The original walnut grips fit perfectly and show moderate wear with no marring or damage aside from a TINY chip at the front toe on either side. Original brass cone front sight, double hammers, spur trigger, and wedge with serial number "2337" marked on the frame, grips, and barrel. The Walch barrel address is difficult to accurately photograph yet is clear and fully legible in person. The action is crisp and functions flawlessly. All ten nipples are clean originals and the bore is fair showing bright sharp rifling with moderate blackpowder frosting and fine pinprick pitting scattered throughout. The bottom of the frame is lightly inscribed "Captain Budd / 2nd Bn 2nd NY / Mt Rifles". Thomas Augustus Budd was born in Washington DC on January 24th 1844 and mustered with the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles Company D in January 1864. That August Budd was promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain of Company D and was mustered out with the rest of the regiment in August 1865. Captain Budd received a veteran's pension the rest of his life and died in Buffalo, New York on July 26th, 1924. The 2nd New York Mounted Rifles "Governor's Guard" saw it's first combat at The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864 and proceeded to participate in nearly twenty major engagements including Cold Harbor, the siege of Petersburg and the battle of the Crater, Five Forks, and Appomattox. A massive archive containing copies of Captain Budd's war orders, letters, documents, and pension records is included. Walch revolvers do not turn up often and are a must-have for any advanced Civil War, Winchester, or curiosity collection. Antique muzzleloaders, or antiques which fire obsolete cartridges, may be shipped internationally however it is the responsibility of the buyer to know and abide by their local laws and provide proof that the antique arm is legal to receive and own.
