Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1861 Miller Conversion Civil War Rifle-Musket, made circa 1863 in Springfield, Massachusetts and converted circa 1865-67. Only about 2,000 are known to have been converted. The Model 1861 was the primary musket at the start of the American Civil War. The musket was originally designed to fire the .58 caliber minie ball loaded via the muzzle. This conversion was one of several vying for military adoption to use the cutting edge metallic cartridges, initially in Rimfire. Ultimately, Erskine S. Allin’s design was chosen and many thousands converted to the “Trapdoor” configuration post-war.
The overall condition is good+. This one has been shortened to current length. Bright bore with some scale toward the muzzle. The action is strong and tight all around. “1863” dated lock. “US” stamped atop the buttplate tang. The walnut stock is sound and solid throughout. A very scarce example of the Miller Conversion!
